New e-waste laws in Rhode Island, Hawaii. Illinois sends bill to Governor.
Hawaii and Rhode Island have new producer responsibility e-waste laws on the books.
The Rhode Island legislation, signed by the Governor on June 27, covers computers, TVs, laptops, and monitors.
The victory is partly due to efforts by Rhode Island Clean Water Action, an ETBC partner.
The Hawaii bill, which covers computers but not televisions, was vetoed by the Governor, but the legislature voted to override her veto on July 8.
The Illinois legislature has sent a producer responsibility bill to Governor Rod Blagojevich for signature.
This is the first producer responsibility bill using return share that includes performance goals.
The Environmental Law and Policy Center in Chicago have been tireless advocates for e-waste legislation
in Illinois for the last two years.

In just over a year, millions of TVs will become obsolete, due to a new rule requiring
all TV signals to switch to digital on February 17, 2009.
So millions of consumers will have to decide what to do: trash or recycle that old TV?
But in many communities, it still isn’t very easy to recycle your old TV. Recycling must be free and convenient to get most consumers to do it. The only way we will have enough recycling sites set up to deal with the coming e-waste tsunami is if the manufacturers set up voluntary national programs and take back our old TVs for free.
